If you need an attorney, for whatever reason, you want to make sure that you choose the one that is right for you. There are so many different kinds of attorneys, and not all of them can do what you need. That means that you need to have some way to pick the right attorney. So, how can you do that?
Look at Specialties
The field of law is a very broad umbrella. Under that umbrella, there is corporate law, family law, traffic law, criminal law, business law, etc. You want to make sure that the lawyer you hire works in the specialty you need. A business lawyer isn't the right choice for you if you need an attorney to help you with your divorce and child custody issues. It's reasonably easy to find out what specialty any attorney has, so you should have no problem finding an attorney specializing in what you need.
Firm Size
A firm can have several partners, lower-level lawyers, and paralegals, or it can be one or two attorneys and a paralegal or two. Depending on your case, you may not really need to have an attorney with a really large firm behind them. For example, if you are just getting a simple divorce, a practice with just one lawyer and a paralegal may be just right for you. However, if you are facing a lot of criminal charges, you may want a larger firm that has plenty of resources to help you with your case.
Comfort Level
One of the things that you should do is meet with your potential attorney at a consultation. These appointments are generally free or very low cost and last just a few minutes. These appointments are usually long enough for you to lay out your case and see if you and the attorney can work together. You don't have to become best friends or even like them, but you should have a basic comfort level with your attorney. If you don't have that basic level, working with them on your case may be hard.
If you need to find an attorney, you may feel overwhelmed. There are all kinds of attorneys out there who cover all kinds of fields. You can use some things to find the attorney who will work best for you and your case. The right attorney can help make your case much easier and your odds of winning better.
